What to do about a utility shutoff in Washington
Find the next step if your service is off, you received a shutoff notice, or your bill is overdue.
- Service is off. Check whether the provider reports an area outage. If service was disconnected for nonpayment, call the utility and ask what is required to reconnect and when service could return.
- You received a shutoff notice. Call the utility promptly. Ask for the deadline and what payment arrangement or assistance could prevent disconnection.
- The bill is overdue. Ask about a payment plan and any assistance offered by the utility. Ask for the terms in writing.
What to say when you call
“I need help keeping or restoring my service. What can I do today? Is there a payment plan or assistance I can apply for? Can you send me the terms in writing?”
Have your bill or notice handy. If someone in your household relies on powered medical equipment, tell the utility. If there is immediate danger, call 911.
